Kissing Jessica Stein (2002)
Rated R
This quirky and original romantic comedy shows us that love doesn't always have to be serious, or straight, to be real. Kissing Jessica Stein follows the loveable but perpetually single Jessica as she answers a personal ad and finds herself dating Helen. The only problem is that Jessica has always been straight. As Jessica spends more and more time with Helen, she finds herself questioning why it is she is always unhappy in her relationships and what might be wrong with her definition of "The One". But can she bring herself to accept Helen and the love connection she has found, no matter what form it is presented in? Kissing Jessica Stein stars its two writers in the lead roles of Helen and Jessica and their passion for and understanding of the film's central topic really comes across in their acting. They are having fun and doing what they love and that kind of spirit is contagious. Kissing Jessica Stein features some of the smartest dialog I have experienced in a film in recent years. You will find yourself scanning the streets for "sexy-ugly" people while you let this film "marinate" in your head. Kissing Jessica Stein is fun, honest, and modern. It is one of the better romantic comedies to come out in recent years, sure to make you laugh out loud and reconsider your definition of love.
